Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Vice President, Jimmy Fund in Brookline, Massachusetts

The Vice President of the Jimmy Fund directs the management of all Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber community-based fundraising events and programs, including Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk, Jimmy Fund Golf, Running Programs and Community Fundraising Events and Partnerships (e.g. Radio-Telethon, Scooper Bowl, third-party events, etc). The VP is the liaison for the Boston Red Sox, Red Sox Foundation and the Friends of DFCI. Responsible for assisting the entire Division with reaching financial goals. Reports to Vice President of Annual, Planned, and Institutional Giving.

This position will evaluate current programs and create and execute approved plans to expand and diversify the donors and participants for the events assigned in order to broaden our donor base and create even more inclusive events.

The onboarding of this role will include a comprehensive training process which includes completion of online modules, shadowing colleagues, as well as hands-on learning experiences throughout the first calendar year in the role.

Dana-Farber is currently undertaking an ambitious fundraising effort to change the future of cancer research and care: The Dana-Farber Campaign. This multibillion-dollar campaign is the largest in the Institute’s history and one of the largest ever in the U.S. focused solely on cancer. Philanthropy raised through The Dana-Farber Campaign is focused on accelerating the Institute’s strategic priorities by supporting revolutionary science, extraordinary care, exceptional expertise, and essential opportunities—helping us prevent, treat, and Defy Cancer.

This position is considered remote, 0-1 days onsite at 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA each week. DFCI guidelines state that employees must reside in New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

  • Oversee the entire Jimmy Fund event fundraising operation, including strategic planning, goal setting, budget oversight, performance management, evaluation of results and creation of strategies to readjust goals as needed to achieve objectives;

  • Responsible for generating $35 million+ in revenue through 800+ peer-to-peer and community-based events and programs annually.

  • Manage annual program budget of $4.5 million;

  • Speak at events throughout the year on behalf of the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber;

  • Work with Trustees, President of DFCI, SVP of Philanthropy and other senior-level staff;

  • Develop and oversee the prospect management strategy for the Jimmy Fund teams to best increase volunteer event manager and event participants’ giving and engagement.

  • Develop and execute the new business and retention strategy to grow the Jimmy Fund’s bottom-line year over year.

  • Work with Philanthropy Marketing to develop event marketing plans and ensure message integration with overall communications strategy;

  • Member of the Senior Management Group in the Division of Philanthropy;

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role manages, evaluates and mentors 4 direct reports and 36 indirect reports.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 15+ years of fundraising and special events experience, with 5-7 years in senior management necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent track record of achieving bottom line fundraising goals. Demonstrated ability to thrive in a complex and dynamic culture. Strong ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with a strong history of meeting deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Strong organizational skills, analytical skills, strategic planning experience, and attention to detail. Previous management experience including hiring, training, coaching, and evaluating staff. Experience working successfully with a variety of constituencies, including donors, trustees, volunteers, vendors, and staff at all levels, including senior faculty and executive leadership. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and development databases. Ability to work independently and be self-motivated. Excellent problem solving and reasoning skills. Ability to work in a collaborative manner with colleagues in Division of Philanthropy in creating and implementing solicitation strategies. Must exercise significant judgment and maintain high degree of confidentiality among staff, patients, prospects, and donors. Willingness to travel, primarily local travel. Experience with diverse donors a plus.
