Brockton Hospital Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer in Brockton, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for the strategic, operational and budgetary performance of the Nursing Administration and Care delivery, encompassing nursing administration and patient care-functions, including Medical/Surgical/Pediatric inpatient units, Emergency Room, Critical Care, Maternity, Respiratory Care, Nursing Education, Perioperative Services, Operating Rooms, PACU, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Cardiac Cath Lab, Psychiatric services, Case Management and Social Work. The CNO will lead the strategic development of an integrated nursing practice ensuring the highest levels of clinical quality and patient satisfaction and safety, as well as planning, implementing and evaluating services in accordance with established objectives and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages all aspects of hospital nursing operations.

  • Es tablishes and achieves goals and obj e cti v e s for clinical departments consistent with hospital goals , mission and Boa r d Priorities.

  • Identifies and develops new business opportunities that s upport the Hospital Mi s sion and respond to competitive threats.

  • Develops and maintains a productive working relationship amongst various physician chiefs and administrati v e directors consistent with Hospital objectives and pr i orities.

  • Manages administrati v e staff and ensur e s ph ysi cian leadership commitment to common g oals .

  • Directs or participate s in the n e gotiation o f all h e althca r e deliver y contr a c ts r e lative to areas of responsibilit y.

  • D e termines op e rational a nd r e source requirements for ne w services. Ev aluates financial fea s ibilit y .

  • Evaluates current profitabilit y by service and pa y or to assist senior management in identifying opportunities to maximi z e n e t re v enue.

  • Coordinates with MIS to develop and implement systems to monitor man a ged care performance.

  • In s titutes revi e w process a s required to ma x imi z e net revenue based upon specific third party requirements .

  • De v elops and ensure s compliance with appropriate standards and policies related to operations and practice.

  • E stablishes acceptabl e s t a ffing patterns con s ist e nt with patient care needs and efficient operations.

  • Manages staff a ccording to r elated hospital policies .

  • Overs e es selection , development, corrective action of staff directly a nd through directors / managers.

  • Prepares and submits an annual operating and capital budget for all areas in conjunction with di r ectors / mana g ers and p h y s ici a ns.

  • Ensures that departmental activities and optimal patient care are provid e d within the appro v ed budget allotted .

  • O v ersees departmental qualit y assurance acti vi ties.

  • E n s ur e s that regulatory and licensure standards are met.

  • K e ep s the President, Chief Executiv e Officer informed on conditions in areas of responsibility.

  • P a rticipate s in strategic pl a nning in concert w ith the organi z ations g oal s that contribute toward mark e t growth , revenue e nhanc e m e nt , cost containment and m ax imi z ing productivity .

  • Int e rpr e t s and eff e cti v el y impl e m e nts all administrati v e pol i cies and proc e dures.

  • Develops pro g ram obj e ctives and s trategies for implementation which focus on the improvement o f proces s es of care and s e r v ic e s which effect patient outcome s a nd patient s a ti sfa ction .

  • Represent s d e partm e nts / di v ision at public forums.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variable within established policies and protocols. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to assign and delegate duties in a clear and understandable manner.

  • Must be able to reasonable make appropriate judgement in communication and actions with patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies and vendors.

  • Manages budgets, establishes decision making framework for all functions, and reviews all programs and policies for all areas of responsibility.

  • Functions independently within broad scope of hospital policies and regulatory guidelines. Establishes policies and procedures for areas of responsibility. Participates in development of hospital policies, strategic and business plan for hospital.

  • Directly manages Associate VP of Nursing, & Several Directors. Through these direct reports, manages staff in all areas on responsibility. Takes rotating assignment as Administrator-On-Call.

    Education/Experience and License:

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration or similar. Equivalent experience may be considered. RN, BS, and M.S. Master’s Degree in Nursing or related filed and at least five years’ experience in an executive nursing role.

  • Experience : Extensive experience in healthcare management (10+ years). Thorough working knowledge of hospital operations as they relate to the clinical areas from an administrative perspective. Sound business judgement, demonstrated communication and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with physician leadership to achieve common goals. Broad knowledge of nursing practice, policies and regulation requirement in an acute setting. Strong communication, negotiation presentation and effective management skills.

  • Certification/Licensure: Licensed to practice professional nursing in Massachusetts.
