State of Massachusetts Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in Brockton, Massachusetts
The Department of Public Health (DPH) in collaboration with the Plymouth County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) in Brockton is seeking a caring and compassionate nursing professional for the role of Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Fostered by a “do no harm” philosophy of care, our ideal applicant will provide comprehensive nursing care which may include but not be limited to completion of a forensic examination with forensic evidence collection, and screening, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI) as needed. The incumbent will provide care that is developmentally appropriate to children and their families, and will serve as part of the CAC’s multidisciplinary team in response to disclosures of child sexual abuse. Additional responsibilities include providing psycho-social support, teaching, health promotion, anticipatory guidance and linkages to the child’s primary care provider.
Please Note:/Candidates who are not currently certified as a Massachusetts Pediatric SANE Nurse will be provided with on the job training and the opportunity to successfully complete certification. Training will include e-learnings/webinars and on-site clinical training at the Plymouth County CAC. Other forms of instruction will include clinical experiences with child sexual abuse experts in hospitals and other CAC settings which provide Pediatric SANE services./
/_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/
Provide overall direct patient care and consultation to pediatric patients (ages infant to 17) and their families when there are disclosures of sexual abuse.
Collaborate with attending physician, social worker, and other members of the multidisciplinary team sharing information regarding forensic findings/interviews, case reviews and health needs.
Administer appropriate health assessments for children who have been sexually abused including pregnancy screening and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing; prescribes appropriate medication for treatment.
Facilitate training/outreach to local hospitals, providers, school nurses, Department of Children and Families (DCF) and other community partners regarding trauma-informed, evidence based practices in the care of children who are sexually abused.
Exercise clinician discretion in developing plans for patient care within established MA SANE protocols.
Participate in professional development opportunities and projects including data collection, research and telenursing activities as needed.
Passion and commitment to evidence based practice and excellent clinical skills.
Thoroughness, independence and excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians, team members and the community.
Proficient usage of Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Knowledge of nursing practice and principles including appropriate nursing terms and abbreviations
Knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development.
Ability to provide culturally competent care, to work with patients of all abilities and in collaboration with diverse professionals.
Capacity to maintain accurate records and exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
- Ability to lift, push or pull patients up to 40 pounds.

The Plymouth Counts Children’s Advocacy Center, a partnership between the Office of Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz and Brockton Area Multi-Services Inc. (BAMSI), offers a comprehensive approach to serving children victims and their families. The center coordinates and supports an interdisciplinary response in a child-friendly environment that promotes children’s safety, health, and well bring.
Children in Plymouth County between the ages of three (3) to eighteen (18), who are the victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, severe neglect or child exploitation/trafficking, receive coordinated services from the multi-disciplinary team. All services are developmentally and culturally customized to meet each child’s individual needs.

Minimum Entrance Requirements
Knowledge, Education and Experience:
Applicants must have at least 5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse with practice in Pediatric Health Nursing, Adolescent Health Nursing, School Health Nursing, Family Health Nursing or Community Health Nursing. In lieu of this requirement, incumbents must have 3 years of experience as a Register Nurse and 2 or more years of experience in a health or victim service related field of practice.
Applicants must have a graduate degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pediatrics, Adolescent or Family Health Nursing or a graduate degree in Forensic Nursing.
Applicants at this level in this series will be required to complete MDPH Pediatric SANE certification within 1 year of employment.
Following initial MDPH Pediatric SANE certification, incumbents must maintain current and valid MDPH Pediatric SANE Certification.
Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License at a Class level specific to assignment.
