Brockton Hospital Nursing Instructor - Per Diem in Brockton, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

The nursing instructor is responsible for classroom and clinical instruction and evaluation, program development, team collegiality and problem solving. The nursing instructor must possess the ability to work cooperatively, be able to demonstrate leadership and organizational skills and be able to appropriately communicate with students, peers and professional associates. The instructor's conduct shall reflect the Code for Professional Nurses and the Core Competencies for Nurse Educators.

Responsibilities:

Display courtesy and professionalism at all times while providing timely, helpful service to all students, patients, visitors, physicians, and associates. 

                

Facilitate Learning :   

 

Implement a variety of active teaching strategies appropriate to student needs, desired student outcomes, content and context. Ground teaching strategies in educational theory.   

                

Identify multi-cultural, gender, and experiential influences on teaching and learning. Use technologies to support the teaching-learning process.   

                

Apply oral, written, and electronic communication that reflects an awareness of self and others along with an ability to convey ideas in a variety of contexts. Create opportunities for students to develop their critical thinking skills and clinical judgment.  

                

Demonstrate interest in and respect for students. Develop collegial working relationships with students, faculty, associates, and clinical agency personnel to promote positive learning environments.  

                

Request textbooks, technology materials, laboratory equipment and other supplies/equipment.  

                

Facilitate Student Development and Socialization :   

 

Identify individual learning needs and styles of adult, multi-cultural, educationally and physically challenged, at-risk, and second degree students. Provide resources to diverse students which help meet their individual learning needs.   

                

Engage in effective advisement and counseling strategies. Create learning environments that are focused on socialization to the role of the nurse and facilitate students’ self-reflection and personal goal setting.   

                

Foster the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective development of students. Assist students to develop the ability to engage in thoughtful and constructive self-evaluation .   

                 

Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies :   

 

Use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learning in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.  Implement assessment and evaluations strategies that are appropriate to the student and student goals and enhance the teaching-learning process.   Draw on literature to design teaching and evaluation strategies.   

                

Exhibit a spirit of inquiry about teaching and learning, student development, and evaluation methods. Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and demonstrate skill in the design and use of tools for assessing clinical practice.   

                

Maintain current records of student achievement. Write weekly anecdotal notes for each student.  

                

Submit course grades and clinical evaluation tools to team leader. Collaborate with students who are on academic or clinical warning and design educational plans.  

Contribute to the development of course syllabi, topical outlines, and other course paperwork.

                

Assist in developing, interpreting, and implementing the philosophy and goals and BHSON policies.   

                

Participate in the development, implementation, revision and evaluation of the BHSON educational program.  

                

Integrate values and behaviors for professionalism:   

 

Model professional behavior for learning, including, but not limited to, involvement in professional organizations, engagement in lifelong learning activities, community activities, and publications and presentations.   Maintain professional practice knowledge base. Serve as a role model of professional nursing.    

                

Prepare reports and accreditation materials as required by governing bodies. Serve on Faculty Organization and its committees. Serve on Hospital committees as elected or appointed. Serve as advisor to class or Student Nurses Association. Support student activities.  

                

Assist in the recruitment and orientation of faculty and students. Participate in information sessions and graduation ceremonies.  Comply with all SH and department safety practices. Report to work consistently and promptly. Provide proper advance notice of absence or tardiness.

                

Function as Team Leader   (full description available in Faculty Handbook)

 

Nursing course organization : (syllabus, topical outline, ATI assessment schedule, clinical evaluation tool, learning activities and orientation / lab day schedules ), contact outside agencies with objectives and guidelines.

Post all prior information on department shared file. Create and manage course classroom in Google classroom.

 

Exam related: Blueprint exams, review questions and submit to Dean, assign / recruit exam proctors, assure exam review is complete and corrected, maintain student grades, submit academic warnings to registrar, forward grades to Dean, post grades on SonisWeb .   

 

Other: track absences, submit clinical warnings (completed by faculty) to registrar. Schedule and chair team meetings, assure ATI exams are scheduled and proctored, assure course / faculty evaluations complete, discuss student issues and problem solve as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned

BASIC KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/APTITUDE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Must be able to reasonably make appropriate judgment in communications and actions with students, patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies, and vendors.

  • Incumbent generally establishes own work plan and priorities, using or modifying procedures, assures timely completion of assigned work in conformance with established departmental policies and standards.

  • Problems lacking clear precedent are reviewed with Dean prior to taking action.

  • Departmental procedures, professional codes and ethics, and governmental regulations provide this position with a framework for decision-making.

  • Function independently within a broad scope of established clinical and classroom responsibilities; function interdependently within a broad scope of established faculty policies, committees, and administrative regulations.

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all students, patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  • Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).

  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    Provides direct supervision over clinical group(s) of nursing students.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Education/Experience/Licenses/Technical/Other:

  • Education : BS., MS. Degree in Nursing required . Certification in nursing education (CNE ) or major in nursing education in graduate school desirable . Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field preferred.

  • Experience : Two years’ full-time employment in nursing, or its equivalent, within the last five years. Nursing education experience desirable .

  • Certification/Licensure: Current license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
