About this role

Our Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), within the scope of practice, provides expert consultation and education to clinical nurses and supports them in planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients and families with psychological manifestations of physical and psychiatric conditions. Works across the medical and nursing divisions to lead multidisciplinary efforts to improve the quality of psychological care for all patients and families at Bridgewater State Hospital. This includes through consultation and teaching strategies which refine and strengthen clinical knowledge development, skill acquisition and judgment of clinical nurses and other clinicians.

What you bring to the table

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited educational program designed to prepare the graduate for practice as an APRN in psychiatry.

Experience:

  • Good moral character as required by MGL c. 112, § 74 and as established by Board policy. Two (2) years’ experience as an APRN in a residential healthcare institution.

  • Able to work without direct immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis and provide appropriate follow up treatment.

  • Must maintain CPR certification, and any other certifications required by contract.

  • High degree of empathetic listening, tact and kindness toward others.

  • Demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with clinical and leadership staff, building and managing interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary partnerships.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Massachusetts RN licensure in good standing (reciprocal applicants may submit applications for RN licensure and APRN licensure at the same time).

  • Current CNS certification in psychiatry granted by a Massachusetts Nursing Board recognized certifying organization.

What you will do

  1. The CNS works under the supervision of the Staff Psychiatrist and the Medical Director, in accordance with established The Company policy and procedure as well as within the State guidelines.

  2. Provides comprehensive assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of the effectiveness of plan of care, including revisions as necessary.

  3. Initiates, monitors, alters medications and treatments according to approved protocols.

  4. Demonstrates thorough understanding of all requirements and practice standards relating to the prescription and administration of medications.

  5. Monitors medication management, initiates appropriate therapies for certain conditions, and changes medications according to variations in a patient’s response within established protocols.

  6. Observes and differentiates between signs and symptoms associated with normal human physiology and those indicative of pathological changes.

  7. Documents all relevant patient care issues in patients’ progress notes and treatment plan.

  8. Thorough understanding of documentation requirements, disaster and fire procedures, infection control, and clinical risk management.

  9. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of patients when providing care and treatment.

  10. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.

  11. Participates in psychiatric on-call schedule as directed by the Medical Director.

  12. Ensures progress note and treatment plan documentation is in specified format, problem oriented, corresponds to the physician order, and is legible.

  13. Ensures all documentation is dated, timed, legible, problem oriented and signed.

  14. Adheres to the established formulary for therapeutic regimens before using non-formulary medications.

  15. Supports standards of psychiatric care through adherence to existing policies and procedures for admission to the infirmary and transfer to emergency room utilization review process for specialty consultant referrals.

  16. Assumes responsibility and accountability for his/her individual judgments and actions

  17. Provides input into facility mandatory committees.

  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
