General Atomics Thermal Analyst, Radar Technologies in Boston, Massachusetts

We are currently hiring a Thermal Analyst who will be a key member within the GA-EMS Radar Technologies group. In this capacity, the Thermal Analyst will contribute to the designs and trade studies in support of new air and ground-based designs. The Thermal Analyst will report to the Manager of Hardware Engineering within the Radar Technologies group.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers on concept reviews to define thermal and mechanical requirements and specifications that ensure thermal reliability under various environmental conditions

  • Perform simulations and analysis (steady-state and transient) to optimize heat dissipation in electrical, mechanical and cooling systems by developing heat transfer models (using ANSYS Icepak, FloTHERM, COMSOL, or CFD software tools)

  • Support product development from concept to production ensuring solution compliance with industry standards (JEDEC, MIL-STD, etc.), safety regulations, and project requirements

  • Evaluate and design heatsinks, liquid cooling systems, thermal interfaces, and airflow solutions for high-power devices

  • Conduct experimental validation of thermal designs using IR imaging, thermocouples, and thermal chambers

  • Optimize PCB layouts and thermal via designs to improve heat spreading in electronic assemblies

  • Identify thermal failure modes (hot spots, thermal runaway) and propose corrective actions

  • Interpret and optimize thermal test data to improve system performance and document design justifications and test results in thermal analysis reports

  • Represent the company at technical reviews, meetings and formal design reviews

  • Stay current with thermal industry innovations, developments and trends

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education

  • Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership

  • 5+ years of experience in thermal analysis, CFD simulation, or heat transfer engineering with a strong knowledge of heat transfer principles and thermal management strategies

  • Proficient using standard thermal simulation software including ANSYS, FloTHERM, COMSOL, SolidWorks Flow Simulation, or other similar tools

  • Prior hands-on experience with thermal testing methods and instrumentation

  • Familiarity with thermal interface materials (including phase-change materials), heatsinks, fans, liquid cooling, heat exchangers, thermoelectric cooling, heat pipes, and vapor chambers

  • Experience in electronics cooling and thermal management

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout a fast-paced, R&D environment

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals

  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance required

*DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: *

  • Demonstrated experience performing thermal designs and analyses for complex radar systems

  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo) for mechanical and thermal design

  • Previous experience working with the Department of Defense

  • Active security clearance
