A Day in the Life

This position is in the Boston, MA Seaport District; reporting to the System Integration Engineering Manager, the Senior Software Systems Engineer will be a contributor within the Medtronic R&D engineering team leading development of processes and tools, as well as supporting the team working with next generation robotic assisted surgical system and related developments.

The Senior Software Systems Engineer is a technical individual contributor role within the R&D engineering team that is developing Medtronic’s Robotic Assisted Surgical Device (RASD). This engineer shall contribute to the development of a complex system that includes aspects of robotics, controls, imaging, multi-user interfaces and minimally invasive surgical instrumentation.

This engineer will participate in the debugging and root cause analysis related to software hardware integration and software defect resolution. This individual shall collaborate with Software Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Hardware Engineers, Reliability Engineers, Verification and Validation teams, and Service and Manufacturing Engineers to ensure the system design meets system and subsystem requirements. This engineer will also develop tools for monitoring system performance, improving utility of logged data, and enhancing debugging.

As the Senior Software Systems Engineer for Integration, you will:

  • Maintain working knowledge of the system design and performance against the requirements

  • Guide strategic efforts to improve the software integration process and to influence the software development process based on integration strategies

  • Learn Software Deployment procedures for all aspects of the robotic platform

  • Perform root cause analysis and debugging related to system level errors as well as triaging reported defects to identify impacted subsystems (software or hardware) and prioritization

  • Create and manage tickets related to software defects and integration findings based on root cause analysis and self-identified trends

  • Contribute to the assessment of proposed design changes and impact based on test evidence

  • Provide written disposition and evidence to resolve anomalies generated from integration issues

  • Provide software support and assistance during usability studies, preclinical labs and/or manufacturing processes

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Prior work experience in system-level product development, full-lifecycle engineering programs and development of product development processes, especially complex electromechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated understanding of structured product development (requirements-driven engineering, documentation, rigorous verification, etc.), engineering verification test development and execution

  • 2+ years of experience with Linux, shell scripting, software installation, QNX and/or knowledge of C, C++, Python

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Knowledge of relevant technologies including:

  • Mechatronics / Robotics

  • Mechanical and electrical interfaces

  • Communication protocols (Ethernet, I2C, UART, SPI)

  • Sensors, actuators, controllers

  • Kinematics of mechanisms

  • Vision and display systems

  • Electromechanical devices controlled by software

  • Understanding of system reliability testing, service support and/or design for manufacturing

  • Capability to process and trend data to drive decision making and prioritization

  • Medical device development experience

  • Knowledge of medical product R&D and clinical/regulatory process

Working Conditions

  • Standard office setting, clean room, surgical lab, operating room, pilot lab, external research organizations, supplier visits

  • Travel and flexible hours as needed
