Job Description Summary

As a LLM Engineer in DLA Piper’s Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics practice, you will be at the forefront of leveraging LLM technologies to revolutionize the delivery of legal services. Your primary role will be to lead the research, development, application and commercialization of cutting-edge Large Language Models (LLMs) to address complex legal challenges and create scalable AI-enabled legal solutions. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary product team, including attorneys, data scientists, and other AI experts, to bridge the technical-legal interface, ensuring our AI solutions are not only technically sound but also address the intricacies of legal work.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Effective Application of LLMs:

  2. Lead the research, design, development, and deployment of LLMs to address complex legal challenges.

  3. Engage in hands-on coding and development, ensuring the highest level of technical excellence in all AI solutions.

  4. Actively experiment with different hypotheses related to LLMs, validating which modifications (e.g. fine-tuning, prompt engineering, custom embedding models, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)) are most beneficial for the specific legal applications at hand. Use rigorous testing and validation methodologies to ascertain the effectiveness of various approaches, driving continuous improvement in our LLM-based solutions.

  5. Stay abreast of the latest research and advancements in LLM and related technologies, including model modification techniques (e.g. fine-tuning, prompt engineering), applying this knowledge to drive innovation within our AI practice.

  6. Development of Legal Services Solutions:

  7. Work closely with legal experts to understand the intricacies of legal challenges and develop AI solutions that address these challenges effectively.

  8. Advise on the selection of data for training LLMs, understanding the implications of data and design choices on the models' performance and outcomes. Ensure that the data used aligns well with the intended legal applications, and is representative, unbiased, and adheres to ethical and legal standards.

  9. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that the developed solutions are well-integrated within our legal practice and serve the intended purposes effectively, ensuring client satisfaction and tangible benefits.

  10. Communication and Collaboration:

  11. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring a shared understanding and alignment across all project stages.

  12. Foster a collaborative environment to ensure the seamless integration of AI solutions within our legal practice.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, with a specialty in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, especially Natural Language Processing.

  • 3 years of experience in developing and experimenting with LLMs or related AI/ML technologies.

  • Proficient in Python, with strong experience in using libraries and frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar.

  • Experience with cloud computing infrastructure for AI/ML, especially Azure.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a related field is highly desirable.

  • Experience in the legal domain or working closely with legal professionals.

  • Familiarity with the sociotechnical implications of AI and a nuanced understanding of ethical considerations in AI applications within law.

  • Experience with training and fine-tuning Foundation Models, including multimodal inputs and outputs.

  • Experience with Azure is preferred.

Pay Transparency

In accordance with New York, California, Washington Pay Transparency Law, the pay range for this position, if hired to work in New York, California, or Washington, is $150,000-$205,000 per year. The compensation offered to a candidate selected for employment will be dependent upon various factors, including the candidate’s geographic market, skills, educational and professional background, experience, and overall qualifications.
