Thermo Fisher Scientific Senior Director of Global Business Development-Biologics in Boston, Massachusetts

How you will make an impact?

The Senior Director, Global Business Development reports to the Vice President Commercial Operations, Biologics, and will have a dynamic role in our organization leading the new business sales operations for the global Biologics sales team with responsibility for driving business growth. In addition to leading the North America and Europe Bio sales teams this role is responsible for drive sales performance for global Biologics business sales targets including contribution from APAC and Strategic Accounts teams within the global commercial organization. This role is a key contributor to the global Biologics Business Unit Leadership Team. A key responsibility will be to build business relationships that leverage integrated programs in conjunction with the Sales Leaders for Drug Product Services (DPS) and other businesses as applicable. In addition, this role serves as the key liaison with the Thermo Fisher Bio Production Group and Biosciences Division to identify synergies and execute joint strategies and initiatives for new customer engagement.

What will you do?

  • Lead a North America and Europe sales team through role model leadership, proactive performance management and coaching, and focused engagement to attract, retain and develop talent

  • Facilitate employee development including defining annual goals, objectives within assigned territories and targets, and career development activities

  • Forecast and lead sales planning for APAC and Strategic Accounts components of the Bio sales plan. Develop reporting cadence to generate global customer view.

  • Support and maintain biologics specific Sales Training playbook in coordination with PSG commercial training team.

  • Work closely with Marketing and the business unit leadership to determine adequate and robust marketing actions to support sales.

  • Reports to Commercial Operations Lead of the business unit to determine execution of tactics annual sales plan as well as strategic business plans

  • Provide customers leadership engagement in building long term integrated business relationships.

  • Active new business pipeline management and leadership level reporting including targeted prospecting activities in conjunction with marketing lead generation programs and development of new business including identification of opportunities with new clients through interaction with other PSG teams and following up on leads

  • Create and implement sales programs for new prospective clients to increase awareness of Pharma Services offerings and key differentiators from our competition

  • Identify and present Pharma Services’ value proposition, including opportunities for strategic cross selling of PSG services.

  • Lead team in development of customer quotations and agreements

  • Provide oversight of accurate quarterly revenue forecasts and budget related to new business at each customer and take strategic action.

  • Work with Sites to achieve excellent customer satisfaction

  • Lead the team to enable compliance with all relevant activities in the database, and share information and background on prospective clients within the territory to stakeholders

  • Provide input into strategic initiatives including integrated service offerings and cross selling and potential M&A.

How will you get here?


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as micro-biology, cellular biology, and chemistry.

  • MBA and/or Advance Science Degree, preferred.


  • Demonstrated leadership in coaching, mentoring, or leading teams

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in sales with proven results in sales including demonstrated consistent above plan performance.

  • Leadership experience in an aggressively growing business climate. Established contacts in major pharmaceutical organizations

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to lead a diverse team across multiple territories

  • Professional presentation skills and ability to network, partner and influence senior leaders – demonstrates executive presence

  • Strong understanding of biologics, including but not limited to vaccines, blood, or blood components, somatic cells, gene therapies, tissues, recombinant therapeutic protein, and living cells used in cell therapy.

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills

  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage short term results concurrent with longer-term
