Our lab builds algorithms that allow machines to understand text in electronic health records, and these algorithms need high quality data to be successful. We are looking for a diligent, detail-oriented, organized, and curious data manager to lead in the creation of these datasets. The scientific products of our research are published in high-impact biomedical journals at computing conferences.

In this role, you will work closely with scientists to design and test human annotation workflows, document annotation best practices in guideline documents, and create annotated datasets with high quality. We perform annotations in an iterative workflow, with feedback between this role and our machine learning researchers. The person in this role will perform pilot annotations in collaboration with researchers, collaboratively develop preliminary annotation guidelines, then continue with annotations and guideline modification in an interactive loop, until the data reaches a satisfactory level of quality. This role requires some combination of background knowledge of medicine and understanding of sophisticated linguistic concepts. The ideal candidate would already have both qualifications but we anticipate that most candidates will have only one and be trained in the other.

This Clinical Research Manager I will be responsible for:

  • Developing annotation guidelines in collaboration with researchers.

  • Annotating health texts with medical and linguistic concepts.

  • Learning how to use custom annotation software for research projects.

  • Performing data quality checks and corrections.

  • Providing input to researchers about annotation workflows and best practices.

In order to qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelor's in Health Science, Mathematics or related.

  • 2 years of data entry and data coordinator experience.

  • Background knowledge of medicine and understanding of sophisticated linguistic concepts, preferred.

  • Analytical skills to handle clinical research data in an organized, accurate and timely manner.

  • Critical attention to detail and accuracy.
