We are particularly focused on applying genome editing technologies. The selected candidate will work on experimental and computational research projects, including work with mice. The candidate must be a responsible individual with strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Previous experience in scientific research would be an asset. Experience with hematopoiesis research is not required, but enthusiasm for learning modern molecular genetic and bioinformatic techniques is essential. Previous Bauer lab research assistants have co-authored 16 peer-reviewed original research articles over the past 7 years and have matriculated to competitive graduate school programs.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Under immediate supervision, performing a variety of routine and specialized laboratory experimental, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research. Assisting in the use of specialized laboratory equipment and analysis of data generated by this equipment

  • According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, performing a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy.

  • Assisting in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor.

  • Performing the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:

  • Maintain records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.

  • Maintain equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner.

  • Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.

  • Inventory supplies alert supervisor to needed supplies, or mix standard reagents.

  • Process order for supplies and/or animals. Attend courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials.

  • Carry out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.

  • Conducting literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.

  • Attending courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information

  • Contributing to the team within and between departments and organizations

To qualify, you must have:

  • The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in a STEM, Psychology, or related field. Preferred degrees are molecular and cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics, gene therapy, hematopoiesis, bioinformatics/computational biology, systems biology, and/or structural/chemical biology

  • Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Minimum 2 year commitment strongly preferred
