MassMutual Reinsurance Treaty Consultant - Remote - US in Boston, Massachusetts

*This position can be 100% remote within the US with travel to MA once per quarter.

  • In office is hybrid model, where only 2-3 days in office is required

The Opportunity

The Reinsurance Development Team is seeking a well-rounded, motivated, and highly organized individual for the Treaty Consultant position. In this position, the Treaty Consultant will be responsible for drafting and coordinating internal and external communications and related workflows pertaining to our reinsurance agreements. In addition, this individual is responsible for maintaining critical documentation pertaining to reinsurance. In this role, the individual will report to the Head of Reinsurance Development, while collaborating with team members, legal, underwriting and the product teams, as well as external reinsurance stakeholders.

The Team

Reinsurance Development operates as a small center of excellence for reinsurance across the company. The team includes a treaty consultant, a reinsurance actuary, a member of actuarial development leadership team, and the reinsurance administration team. We manage all of MassMutual’s reinsurance relationships. The team leads and oversees all aspects of reinsurance including developing, negotiating, securing, and administering both traditional and financial reinsurance solutions to support the operational, risk and capital position of the Company, develop and implement strategies to optimize the Company’s existing use of reinsurance, and managing and overseeing reinsurance relationships across the organization. We thrive on identifying solutions and executing, but also on effectively managing all our agreements and ensuring appropriate controls and governance around all aspects of reinsurance.

The Impact

  • Reinsurance provides essential support for every product line at MassMutual, where the individual will have broad exposure across the company, and perform a function covering both financial and legal protection aspects related to our agreements

  • Primary responsibilities include:

  • Drafting new agreements and amendments in partnership with legal and guidance from the Head of Reinsurance Development and other internal stakeholders

  • Managing internal and external communications including some level of reinsurance treaty negotiations, and managing the agreement process through execution

  • Maintaining our standard template for business-as-usual agreements

  • Supporting the Request for Proposal by facilitating communications between internal and external parties, while maintaining documentation of material items

  • Assisting the reinsurance administration team in understanding new treaty requirements and changes from new treaties

  • Monitoring certain requirements of treaties are periodically satisfied by us, our internal business partners, and our external reinsurers

The Minimum Qualifications

  • An individual with at least 5 years of experience in the life, health, or annuity insurance industry with related experience to work on agreements and documentation; specific reinsurance experience preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Strong organization, communication and writing skills

  • Ability to prioritize

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience with Life and Annuity reinsurance treaties and amendments

  • Any paralegal, document management and administrative training or qualifications is a plus
