OVERVIEW:

Performs and directs major projects related to the development of new thermodynamics-based models in reservoir simulation applications. Implements new and existing models in a full-field reservoir simulator. Performs testing and validation of implemented models against industry-standard simulators, if applicable, and against experimental data, when available. Maintains knowledge of the state-of-the-art in research and industry. Provides support to colleagues and customers using developed models and works closely with team members to integrate support for developed models into their work.

SCOPE:

Develops and coordinates detailed studies to implement existing and/or novel thermodynamics-based models to describe fluid and mixture properties in a full-field reservoir simulator. May perform as a consultant on reservoir engineering studies, technical problems and projects involving current field operations. 

This position is responsible to an appropriate level of supervision for the solution of complex engineering problems requiring a level of ability and experience beyond that normally available at the Engineer II level. Supervision is limited to consultation regarding the scope and intent of the study to be conducted. Assignments are to be completed with a minimum of supervision; technical direction will be supplied by this level to additional engineers which may be temporarily assigned to the project due to magnitude and complexity. The results of all studies or recommendations are reviewed by the Supervising Engineer of the Unit/Group to which it is assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop scientific software.

  • Work with parent company (Saudi Aramco) technical experts to establish technical requirements for software.

  • Develop and implement new and existing thermodynamics-based models for multi-phase and multi-component systems in a full-field reservoir simulator.

  • Develop and implement new and existing models for CO2 sequestration and geochemical reactions in a full-field reservoir simulator.

  • Attend scientific conferences and read technical publications to maintain up-to-date knowledge of computational modeling.

  • Make and deliver technical presentations within Aramco Americas and Saudi Aramco, as well as at outside technical conferences.

  • Represent Aramco Americas & Saudi Aramco effectively to external organizations.

  • Consults with and provides technical guidance to Management and related engineering groups on matters which fall into his/her area of expert technical competence including budget studies, development programs, reservoir studies and equipment purchases and studies.

  • Reviews work of engineers directed on projects where additional manpower has been assigned.

  • Assists in training and onboarding of new engineering personnel.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.S. Degree in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics discipline as appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned jobs.

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics preferred.

  • Seven years (7) experience in a substantive industrial, technological or laboratory area relevant to the job’s assignment.

  • Candidate should be able to prototype and implement software routines using commonly available programming languages (e.g. MATLAB or Python).  Experience working with C/C++ is preferred.

  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined.

  • Candidate should be comfortable working independently or as part of a project team.  Frequent project presentation and travel to meetings at conferences and universities is expected.  Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.

     

BUSINESS CONTACTS:

  • Contact with all levels of Management within SAO Petroleum Engineering and Operations.  Often represents Petroleum Engineering and Operations in contacts with other organizations or in presentations to ASC & SAO Management regarding new projects or operating procedure in his/her area of expertise and will represent the company where appropriate in technical discussions with outside organizations.

     

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

  • Operates standard office equipment, including but not limited to personal computers, calculators, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.

  • Reads and comprehends published, handwritten, and typewritten materials, company forms, and computer printouts.

  • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and database functions in the Windows environment.  

  • Travels to meetings, seminars, and to vendor offices in Houston, throughout North America, and in Saudi Arabia.

  • Inspects equipment during all phases of manufacturing and shipment.  Climbs ladders, scaffolds and uses temporary walkways to gain access.  

  • Tours and inspects operating facilities and job sites during all phases of operation, maintenance or construction.  Climbs ladders, scaffolds and uses temporary walkways to gain access.

  • During unusual or emergency operating, maintenance and construction activities, incumbent can be exposed to dangerous chemicals, acids and corrosives, and hydrocarbons.

  • The job requires the typical physical demands of an office environment and is normally performed at a location that is an air-conditioned, well-lighted office building that meets building, safety occupant health, and facility access codes.
