Chewy Paralegal - IP, CPG Regulation, Marketing in Boston, Massachusetts
Our Opportunity:
Chewy's Legal Department is seeking a proactive and diligent Paralegal to support our Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) and Intellectual Property (IP) legal teams in Boston, MA! The Manager-level Paralegal will play a critical role in providing legal support for product development, labeling compliance, and intellectual property matters, while ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and corporate policies. The ideal candidate is execution-focused, self-motivated , and eager to learn, with a strong commitment to improving efficiency across a wide range of legal activities. The Paralegal will take a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process optimizations to streamline routine legal requests and reviews.
What You'll Do:
Legal Research and Analysis
Regulatory Research : Conduct in-depth research on federal and state regulations affecting pet food, treats, over-the-counter medications, and accessories. Focus on compliance with agencies such as the FDA, EPA, USDA, FTC, and other regulatory bodies.
IP and Marketing Regulations : Analyze legal requirements related to intellectual property, marketing regulations, product labeling, and product safety.
Legislative Monitoring : Stay current on evolving laws and regulations impacting product ingredients, labeling, and advertising requirements for pet products.
Regulatory Filings : Support the preparation and submission of filings and registrations with relevant regulatory agencies, including the EPA.
Product Support
Labeling and Safety Compliance : Assist with legal reviews of product development, ensuring compliance with labeling and safety protocols.
Product Recalls : Support product safety processes, including the management of recalls and addressing consumer complaints in coordination with internal teams.
Marketing and Content Clearance
Material Review : Evaluate marketing materials, including print, digital, and social media content, for compliance with corporate policies, FDA, and FTC regulations.
Claim Substantiation : Verify product claims for compliance with legal and regulatory standards, identifying any IP or trademark issues that require further review.
Guidance Delivery : Provide direction on marketing materials under the supervision of in-house counsel.
Trademark Clearance and Prosecution
Trademark Searches : Conduct preliminary trademark screenings, analyze results, and draft summaries and recommendations for the IP legal team.
Portfolio Management : Support domestic and international trademark registration processes, including filings, renewals, and enforcement actions.
Regulatory and Compliance Support
Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product development teams to ensure all content meets legal standards, including compliance with FTC guidelines and IP law.
Research and track regulations to support product development initiatives and state registrations.
Draft comprehensive white papers, policies and develop processes to support compliance initiatives.
Process Improvements
- Lead initiatives to improve workflows, streamline routine legal requests, and improve efficiency in regulatory, IP, and marketing reviews.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with internal teams such as quality assurance, safety, customer service, marketing, and merchandising to support product launches, marketing campaigns, and IP protection strategies.
Documentation and Record Keeping
- Draft, review, and maintain legal documentation related to product development, safety, recalls, intellectual property, and marketing compliance.
What You'll Need:
Paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited program preferred.
5+ years of experience in paralegal role related to regulatory compliance, intellectual property, marketing, and/or consumer product safety.
Familiarity with intellectual property law, including trademarks and copyright.
Experience with managing domestic and international trademark registrations.
Experience with marketing regulations and content clearance processes.
Strong research and analytical skills, particularly in trademark and IP searches.
Excellent communication and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the CPG or e-commerce industry.
Familiarity with product labeling requirements and safety regulations.
Familiarity with food and consumer product safety.
Familiarity with patents.
Experience supporting product recalls.
Experience in process improvement and workflow management.
Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Slack, NetDocuments, Legal Tracker, Smartsheet, Confluence, and other similar programs.
