The Hematology/Oncology Clinical Nurse Educator is a 40-hour on-site position, based on

6 Northeast (6NE). The educator works as part of a collaborative 6th floor educator team to support Hematology/Oncology/SCT programs, and oversee professional development and learning of the 6th floor nursing and clinical assistant (CA) staff. This individual supports learners in the practice setting to facilitate continuous development which is aligned with the goals of Nursing and Patient Care Operations via education, orientation/onboarding, competency, and role transition activities.

Skill development

The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include experiential knowledge in effective collaboration, evidence-based practice, and clinical inquiry. The educator partners with the unit leadership team to advance the practice of nursing and the professional development of nurses, and participates in hospital, departmental and multidisciplinary programs, committees, and special projects.

The Nurse Educator is responsible to:

  • Provide nursing professional development expertise as an educator, facilitator, change agent, leader and researcher.

  • Support the development of the bedside nurses through coaching, mentoring, and career development services to achieve excellence in the delivery of evidenced-based nursing practice.

  • Plan, implement and evaluate an ongoing program of professional development including in-service, mandatory, and continuing education for assigned staff which is congruent with the goals of Professional Development Council, the practice setting and the department of Nursing Patient Care Operations.

  • Assists with and participates in the evaluation, development and implementation of evidence-based practice and dissemination of results of clinical inquiry.

  • Plan, implement and evaluate an ongoing program of clinical orientation for assigned staff consistent with the goals of Nursing Patient Care Operations, CEI, and Professional Development Council.

  • Contribute to a professional nursing environment to meet the needs of the diverse unit and global needs of the Boston Children’s Hospital system.

  • Develop, manage, and implement programs for a wide variety of educational initiatives including program development, instruction and evaluation with emphasis on professional development for all levels of Oncology/Hematology nursing staff.

  • Provide leadership and expertise through the processes of intra- and inter-professional collaborative partnerships consultation, facilitation and education to work toward goals that are consistent with the needs of the assigned practice setting.

  • Demonstrate well developed communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Demonstrate proficiency and comfort with technologies.

  • Demonstrate advanced skills in clinical pediatric care, education, and evidence-based practice tools and techniques.

  • Demonstrate an up-to-date nursing practice based on available education, technology, and products/devices.

Job Requirements:

  • Massachusetts RN License

  • Five years of clinical nursing experience

  • Specialty certification required; CPHON/CPON, OCN, BMT-CN, or NPDS-BC preferred

  • MSN or enrollment in MSN program highly preferred

  • Participation or leadership experience in educational and professional nursing initiatives
