Under close supervision, help performs specialized techniques for immunohistochemical studies. Help coverslip slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Responsible for filing and retrieval of tissue blocks or slides. Washes and sterilizes glassware and mixes solutions. Documents daily QA/QC charts for laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory equipments and working solutions. Records work in laboratory log books and in Powerpath LIS with a high level of accuracy. Performs all duties necessary to assist IHC technologists or department staff to ensure continuity of laboratory operations. Needed skills and techniques will be developed during first six months of employment through directed work assignments and in-service training.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Must possess a minimum of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a biological/physical science or equivalent, with courses in immunology and histology or equivalent training. Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired. Computer skills highly desired.
Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens, and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.
Under close supervision, checks surgical case number and verifies on worksheet.
Prepares all reagents, buffers and stains utilized in laboratory and maintain acceptable working volumes.
Organizes slides for distribution to residents, fellows and/or senior pathologists according to requisition paperwork and worksheets.
Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment. Verifies that all QA/QC has been done.
Maintains inventory of a large number of reagents and other supplies in Lab. Follows established protocols for proper storage and maintenance of quality control for all reagents and other supplies.
Maintains equipment in proper working order and perform maintenance as necessary.
Identifies problems and brings to the attention of senior laboratory staff. Troubleshoots under supervision.
Assists in safety training of all laboratory personnel. This includes maintaining appropriate documentation and protocols.
