Pacific Northwest National Laboratory High School HSSRI – Data Science & Machine Intelligence Intern [Academic] in Boston, Massachusetts

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber sophomore or junior high school students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI) Program. This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM - or Computer Science) to work during the academic year with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area. Students attend regular classes in their school for half a day and work up to four hours a day, five days each week at the Laboratory. Students must be part of a required work-based learning class. HS SRI is a 36-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for academic cohort will be August 27, 2024.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to play a larger role in improving and streamlining environmental and permitting reviews. In particular, utilizing supervised or unsupervised machine learning can improve accessibility and organization of information contained in past environmental review documents. There are different opportunities when developing a NEPA document to review and assess information from other reviews or available sources specific to an environmental resource.
