Wayfair Experiential Design Lead in Boston, Massachusetts

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Wayfair’s Experiential Design team is looking for a senior leader to consult across various functional teams to build, develop, and execute strong and differentiated physical retail concepts. You will work with Visual Merchants on the Physical Retail team, the Creative Director on each brand, and business stakeholders to bring to life highly immersive physical brand experiences. You will work with the local architects and marketing partners to establish customer journeys and then oversee the implementation and execution of those plans. You’ll apply sales data and business objectives while interpreting design trends to make smart and stylish decisions that become experiential stories for our customer. It’s 50% art, 50% science. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">In this role you will dive right in, making connections, managing budgets, and executing excellently in order to stand up our first ever retail stores. You will be expected to build strong relationships with operations, merchants, art directors, marketers, and project managers, as you focus on optimizing and refining our first retail stores.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">This will require strategizing which creative levers can be pulled, and developing a plan for implementation. As the lead authority on experience, you’ll be responsible for defining the customer journey, the tool box of branded elements for each business, and providing guidance to the teams on how, where, and when to invest. Ideal candidates will thrive on the unexpected and have experience working through high-visibility projects with lean teams. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your day-to-day responsibilities will exercise all creative muscles; it’s essential that you are team oriented and resourceful, and don’t view any individual responsibility as below or above your scope.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Candidates must submit a portfolio of work in order to be considered.</span></p>

<p><strong>What You’ll Do</strong></p>


<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Establish the look and feel of our brand concept stores with an eye on brand strategy, scalability, budget, and amazing customer experiences. Develop store concepts and layouts that meet functional and business needs. Be responsible for project plans, schedules, production of construction documents and other relevant materials.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Use your industry connections to consult and execute on highly specific installations like lighting and fixture design, art and merchandise installations, etc.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Work cross-functionally and partner with other business groups at Wayfair as needed. Seek and develop ways of helping the team work smarter, faster, and easier. Develop, align on and implement processes when and where necessary.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Contributes to overall seasonal creative strategy and is responsible for execution in the physical retail channel. Contributes to the strategy and execution of other channels as needed.</span>


<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Provides clear, effective and timely communication of design direction, feedback and changes to direct reports, addresses exceptions and ensures understanding of wider business goals and context to help team members at all levels be successful.</span></li>



<li>Contributes to annual operating plan, budget and roll-out strategy for physical retail, including fixtures, finishes, brand standards, etc. Consults with cross-functional teams on cost-saving opportunities and implements appropriate changes on a quarterly basis and as needed.


<li>Negotiates contracts with vendors, ensures contract compliance and manages ongoing relationships.</li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Works with teams to reinforce a positive culture and provides ongoing, consistent feedback and coaching to the team. Oversees training and development of team members. Conducts performance reviews per company policies. </span></li>




<p><strong>What You’ll Need</strong></p>


<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">5+ years of demonstrated experience leading, managing and directing design teams with accountability for team performance and results in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">7+ years of experience in architecture, interior and/or industrial design, with emphasis on physical retail and/or hospitality, either in-house in a retailer/brand/corporate environment or as an agency that specializes in physical retail experiences</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br></span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">A deep affinity for interior design, with a sharp eye and understanding of current sector, industry and sustainability trends. Demonstrated ability to communicate design vision in visual, written, and verbal formats.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to successfully interact with all levels of the organization. Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, a positive work environment, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">A wealth of curiosity and a high-tolerance for calculated risk.</span></li>

<li>Ability to create innovative designs and multi-media installations by interpreting seasonal strategy and design objectives into store locations.</li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Demonstrated understanding of building and health codes and other relevant requirements. Ability to work in AutoCAD, Sketch-up and/or other relevant software and tools.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br><br></span></li>
