The Director of Special Projects in the Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Community and Inclusion will join BU at an important time as the University looks to the future. The University is completing its 2030 strategic plan. Essential to the completion and implementation of the plan is the integration of two central pillars, Community: Big Yet Small and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
The Director of Special Projects, reporting to the VP/AP for Community & Inclusion Boston University will play an essential role in helping to ensure that elements and initiatives within these distinct yet interconnected and interdependent areas are successfully implemented. The director will work in both the Community portfolio and the DEI portfolio, identifying strategic opportunities for integration and overseeing projects and bringing them to completion. The Director of Special Projects must thrive in maker space and function as not only an engineer but as an architect both envisioning an outcome and building the infrastructure to effectively operationalize it. The Director must be a seasoned leader with knowledge and expertise in both community-building endeavors within Higher Education as well as be rooted in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work as either a primary or secondary field of expertise. The successful candidate must also be a highly collaborative leader who can work effectively with a broad range of constituents, including DEI professionals, faculty, administrators, staff members, and members of the Boston community. Because of this moment of integration and strategic reimagination, the Director must thrive in a highly variable environments and have exceptionally strong project management and oversight skills. Essential to this position will be the ability to run multiple large projects to completion simultaneously and to be able to capitalize on the interconnections between distinct projects. Reporting to the Director will be the Communications Manager for BU Diversity & Inclusion. Further, the Director must be comfortable working with ambiguity, given the emerging nature of the Community & Inclusion portfolio.
Qualifications will include exceptionally strong project management skills, exemplary writing and communication skills; experience with strategic communications; DEI fluency and expertise, and experience in Higher Ed.
8-15 years of progressive advancement in leadership and project management
Expertise within DEI, especially in higher education
Higher Ed experience
Strong management and oversight experience
Strong communications skills (verbal and written)
Experience with community-building initiatives
Ability to effectively lead large and small groups through a process to its conclusion
Envisioning and operationalizing outcomes/projects
Facility with public speaking and presenting to large and small groups
