The Director of the Victim Compensation & Assistance Division is the Attorney General’s designee, pursuant to G.L. c. 12, § 11K, to administer the provisions of the Compensation of Victims of Violent Crimes Act, G.L. c. 258C. The Director of the Victim Compensation & Assistance Division supervises a staff that annually receives approximately 3,000 applications for compensation under the Compensation of Victims of Violent Crimes Act. The Director is responsible for reviewing and approving decisions to claimants regarding their claims for compensation, appeals of those decisions, and oversight and management of federal and state grant funds. Primary Duties: The Director will be responsible for: (1) administering the provisions of the Victims of Violent Crime Compensation Act and its accompanying regulations; (2) supervising the Division’s staff, including claims advocates and support personnel, and ensuring that staff receive appropriate training; (3) overseeing the processing of approximately 3,000 claims per year; (4) reviewing and approving compensation award and denial decisions; (5) reviewing and issuing decisions of claims appeals and working with Assistant Attorneys General on judicial appeals; (6) formulating and implementing policies and procedures relative to processing claims; (7) engaging in outreach and providing trainings to victim service providers across the Commonwealth; (8) assisting the Attorney General’s staff in policy and legislative matters pertinent to survivors of violent crime; (9) collaborating with external victim compensation agencies and non-profits to establish a support network for survivors; (10) applying for and administering federal and state grants for victim compensation; and (11) performing any other responsibilities assigned by the Attorney General or their designees. Juris Doctor preferred. Candidates must have effective organizational, management, analytical, and written and oral communication skills, as well as excellent computer skills. Candidates with experience in claims processing and/or case-tracking systems is preferred. In lieu of claims processing and/or case tracking systems experience, candidates with extensive experience working with or in support of crime survivors will be considered. Candidates should have a background in grant management, with a preference for candidates with experience in managing federally funded grant programs. Fluency in a second language, both speaking and writing, is also preferred. The successful candidate will be able to develop and implement victim and survivor-centered systems and processes that increase equity and access for survivors of crime.
