This position will support the mission of Student Health Services (Behavioral Medicine/Sports Medicine), the Athletic Department, and the University at large in providing the highest quality mental health services for the student-athletes at BU. The director performs a wide range of complex tasks including coordinating the clinical treatment team of mental health providers which delivers group, individual and athletic team services for all BU student-athletes; coordinating the activities of the wellness committee, a multi-disciplinary treatment team for student-athletes which may include (as situation demands) mental health providers, team physicians, athletic trainers, registered dieticians, sport and performance psychology coaches (academic advisors and strength and conditioning coaches may be included at times); providing counseling and psychotherapy with student-athletes; consultation and relevant mental health compliance programming to athletics administration, coaches, staff, and athletes; facilitating implementation of NCAA Mental Health Best Practices with BU Athletics; conducting outreach, prevention and mental health education for student-athletes; oversight of early identification screenings with incoming student-athletes; building relationships within the broader community to build appropriate referral networks, and providing emergency services. In addition, the incumbent performs supervision of mental health services and program development for clinical (psychology) trainees seeking experience and expertise working with student-athletes and may involve formalizing extern and/or pre-doctoral intern training rotations as part of the clinical training program in Behavioral Medicine. This individual should have extensive experience and a working knowledge of NCAA Mental Health Best Practices, as well as contemporary issues in providing psychological services to highly competitive athletes along the full spectrum of care. The position will report to the Director of Behavioral Medicine and work closely with Head Team Physician and Athletics Administration. The incumbent acts in a manner consistent with the APA code of ethics in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA requirements, and in accordance with Behavioral Medicine Policies and laws governing mental health practices in the State of Massachusetts, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and university policy related to student athlete support.

Required Skills

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology, social work, or a related field

  • Licensure or license eligible in Massachusetts as a psychologist

  • Knowledge and interest in sport and performance psychology interventions and team dynamics

  • 5 years minimum experience in college mental health AND intercollegiate athletics

Preferred qualifications:

  • CMPC designation by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP)

  • Advanced degree or training in the provision of sport psychology (i.e., extensive coursework in sport psychology, structured clinical training experiences)

  • Membership in Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association (CCSPA), APA Div 47, or Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
