Boston University DATA ANALYST, Global Development Policy Center in BOSTON, Massachusetts
The Boston University Global Development Policy (GDP) Center, a research center that focuses on policy-oriented research for financial stability, human well-being, and environmental sustainability across the globe, is seeking a Data Analyst to oversee its Global China Initiative’s Data Analysis for Transparency and Accountability (D.A.T.A.) project. This project seeks to increase the transparency of Chinese economic activity across the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) so that host country governments, Chinese policymakers, scholars, journalists, and civil society organizations can engage in more empirical-based discourse and action agenda geared toward greening the BRI.
The Data Analyst will be responsible for maintaining the GDP Center’s suite of databases, which currently includes the following: China’s Overseas Development Finance (CODF) Database; China’s Global Energy Finance (CGEF) Database; China’s Global Power (CGP) Database; China-Latin America Finance (CLAF) Database; and China-Africa Loans (CALD) Database.
The Data Analyst will work closely with PIs and research leads to identify, review, and integrate external data sources into GDP Center data; collaborate with the research teams in the conduct of the collection of data across the Center's various databases; clean, verify, and manage data input.
The Data Analyst will work across functional teams and with external consultants on the design and presentation of interactive data visualizations.
Data management, including extraction and cleaning of raw data from primary and secondary sources.
Derivation of new variables, labeling and formatting of raw and derived variables, and multiple imputation.
Identify and troubleshoot coding errors.
Document processes involved in data preparation, manipulation, and analysis.
Use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytics efforts.
Extract information from the datasets and the Center’s databases for inclusion in reports to internal and external audiences.
Other duties as assigned.
Experience in R strongly preferred
A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred
3-5 years related work experience
This is position is for a two-year appointment and is subject to periodic performance reviews. Potential renewal is contingent upon funding availability.
