Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is seeking an intern to support the planning and implementation of its youth leadership program, the Mildred C. Hailey Community Leadership Institute for Youth. The Leadership Institute is a collaboration between the Martha Eliot Health Center and the Jamaica Plain Tree of Life/Arbol de Vida and works with up to 10 middle and high-school age students in the Jackson Square neighborhood. Utilizing a social justice curriculum, the Leadership Institute’s goal is to empower youth to become active leaders in their own community.
This position will report to the Community Health Planning Coordinator for the Office of Community Health (OCH) and will work closely with Martha Eliot Health Center’s Community Engagement Coordinator and other local community-based organizations.
This position is an excellent opportunity to work directly with youth on leadership and civic engagement, enhance public speaking and facilitation skills, plan programs, and further Martha Eliot Health Center and Boston Children’s Hospital’s involvement in the community.
The Community Health Intern will be responsible for:
Along with the Community Engagement Coordinator, co-facilitating youth discussions and activities on Monday and Wednesday evenings following the curriculum.
Supporting the development of the Leadership Institute’s application, participating in outreach efforts, and interviewing potential candidates during the selection process.
Communicating with the Community Engagement Coordinator and Community Health Planning Coordinator regarding progress.
Organizing field trips, projects, and activities for program participants.
Developing and conducting pre and post program evaluations.
Performing other duties as assigned.
To qualify, you must have:
Enrollment as a current undergraduate student in your junior or senior year, or graduate student studying human development, education, social work, public health, or related fields preferred.
Interest and/or experience in working with youth.
Previous experience in teen or children’s programming.
Ability to work independently and with a team.
Ability to work respectfully with community residents of all ages and backgrounds.
Awareness of different cultures.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in an organized manner.
Spanish speaker is highly preferred.
The ideal candidate will be available for at least 16 hours per week and MUST be available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-6pm from now until mid-June. *
