Boston University CLINICAL VETERINARIAN/SENIOR CLINICAL VETERINARIAN, BUMC Lab Animal Science Center in BOSTON, Massachusetts

This position provides preventative and clinical medicine services, disease diagnosis, clinical oversight and training for laboratory animal husbandry, and training and participation in experimental techniques for animals used in biomedical research and education at Boston University and its affiliates via the BU Animal Science Center (ASC). This position also serves a regulatory compliance and ethical oversight role in support of the BU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), applicable laws and regulations, and accreditation standards. The (Senior) Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for veterinary oversight and coordinated development of the Animal Research Service (ARS), which supports ABSL-3 and -4 research in the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University. This position reports to the Attending Veterinarian and Director of the Animal Science Center (ASC) and is part of the broader Animal Science Center, which provides oversight and assistance in support of biomedical research both at NEIDL and more broadly across Boston University. This position will be part of the ASC vet on-call program and may be called in to support specific projects outside of the NEIDL.

The main functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide preventive health measures and clinical care, including diagnosis and treatment or resolution of unintended disease and injury as well as colony and source surveillance for excluded pathogens, adequate foodstuffs and drinking water, and appropriate husbandry.

  • Supervising other ASC personnel, including professional staff, who perform laboratory animal medicine.

  • Participate in institutional oversight of laboratory animal care and use via the IACUC and other BU entities to ensure humane practices, a safe workplace, and regulatory compliance with applicable BU policies, laws and regulations, and accreditation standards.

  • Train investigators on proper animal use procedures and monitor the acceptability of those procedures when performed on laboratory animals. This may include overseeing other ASC personnel, including veterinarians, that provide that training.

  • Participate in research initiatives either within ASC or in collaboration with scientists at BU and elsewhere to evaluate new methods of laboratory animal care and use, new animal models of human disease or injury, or similar scholarly pursuits.

  • Participate as a member of ASC’s management team to improve the quality and efficiency in how the department maintains safety, respect, learning, and excellence.

Required Skills

  • Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification with post-graduate work experience at a ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent

  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the US.

  • ACLAM boarded or eligible preferred, ACLAM board certification required for Senior title.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge and experience in rodent and nonhuman primate models and/or work with infectious diseases at ABSL-3 and -4 levels that includes dosing, sampling and capturing physiological or clinical pathology data measurements.

  • Multi-tasking and ability to work synergistically with other stakeholders including EHS, Facilities, ROHP, Security and Investigators.

  • Must meet requirements and qualifications to assume delegated program responsibility in NEIDL

  • Must meet requirements and qualifications for the Personnel Suitability and Reliability Program including DOJ/FBI background checks and SRA clearance in order to handle select agents and work in the biocontainment environment.

  • Must be willing to participate in a medical health surveillance program and be able to wear a protective level A suit.

  • Manage duties outside of NEIDL biocontainment as assigned such as weekend duty rotation. Participate in ASC managerial and strategic initiatives as led by ASC Director.

  • The person in this role is considered essential personnel and will be available for remote and on-campus consults and veterinary care beyond the standard 40-hour work week.
