State of Massachusetts Chief of Staff - Office of Senator Becca Rausch in Boston, Massachusetts

Senator Becca Rausch (D-Needham) is a progressive legislator whose policy portfolio focuses on reproductive justice, public health, election reform, and equity and justice for all. The Chief of Staff is the Senator’s primary advisor and directs the operations of the office, including the Senator’s legislative portfolio, committee service, special projects, communications, district matters, and constituent services, in addition to administrative work. This is a senior level position. Essential job functions: * Serve as chief advisor to the Senator; * Supervise all full-time employees and interns, including planning, assigning, and directing all projects and routine work in the office; * Advance long- and short-term office goals and policy priorities; * Successfully coordinate with other government offices (local, state, and federal), advocates, and constituents; * Oversee the Senator’s schedule, calendar, and workflow; * Maintain internal personnel records and manage all hiring processes; * Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the Senator, in-office staff, Senate leadership, and other Legislative offices and staff; * Research, comprehend, and effectively communicate complex policy issues and legislative proposals; * Support the Senator’s committee leadership and service; * Support relationships with the press; * Conduct staff meetings; * Attend meetings and briefings both virtually and in person on behalf of and alongside the Senator; * Manage the Senator’s email; * Manage special projects as needed; and * Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus a minimum of five (5) years’ professional experience, including at least two (2) years’ experience in state politics; * Ability to cooperatively lead, motivate, and work with a diverse team, including follow-up as needed to ensure timely completion of tasks; * Ability to multi-task, prioritize, work independently, and respond quickly and accurately to urgent and changing demands * Outstanding organizational skills, including calendar and email management; * Outstanding interpersonal skills; * Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially with regard to communicating across differences in a professional and thoughtful manner; * Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills; * Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as occasionally required; * Ability to meet deadlines set by the Senator and legislative calendar; * Proven commitment to advancing intersectional equity. * Fluency and ease with technology and communication platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office 365, Google Docs, and Zoom; and * Ability to cooperatively lead, motivate, and work with a diverse team, including follow-up as needed to ensure timely completion of tasks Preferred Qualifications: * Strong knowledge of local governance and lawmaking processes; * Management experience; * Experience in or with the Massachusetts Legislature; * Experience in one or more of the Senator’s policy priority areas; and * Connection to the Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex district (Attleboro, Franklin, Millis, Natick, Needham, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Plainville, Sherborn, Wayland, Wellesley, and Wrentham) The position is temporarily remote due to COVID-19, with in-person work expected to resume in the latter half of 2021.
