Description

As a member of Group Actuarial, this position assumes a leadership role in the keeping our lights on to meet the financial reporting needs and support the business growth. The candidate will develop a strong understanding of valuation systems, take a leadership role in introducing new actuarial tools and improving actuarial efficiency, and be a change champion to embrace changes and new / more efficient ways of working in global actuarial function.

The position provides an opportunity for collaborating with and influencing other Group Functions areas as well as with various Manulife / John Hancock business units, and for gaining an understanding of the many types of business and operating environments across the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Partnering with Central Modeling Team, to drive consistent AXIS modeling best practices;

  • Continue to partner with Group Actuarial’s Par oversight team and business actuarial teams to understand and translate the business needs to the requirements to not only complete the rollout of Par Cost Calculator globally but also to provide support whenever needed to meet business analytical needs

  • Working with other Group Actuarial teams (GAM, Par Oversight, Basis Change, etc), ALM, General Account Ops, Risk, and segment actuarial teams etc to maintain and enhance the discount rate calculators, and playing a key coordination role in the annual basis change, off cycle financial basis change process, ad hoc business analysis, and strategic initiatives to piece the puzzle together, lay out the change process, produce the rates, and advise operations team the process change in the production cycle;

  • Act as a liaise between segment actuarial teams and Group Function Technology to enhance the Assumption Repository (ASR) and the process around it to improve the performance and user experience;

  • Provide Quarter End support for AXIS modelers, IT partners and Production Support teams;

  • Working with AXIS modelers to automate the AXIS model runs, enable the efficient use of the actuarial computing environment and improve the model run efficiency;

  • Collaborate with actuarial teams to problem solve and research, develop and implement new solutions to support the global actuarial community;

  • Accountable for Actuarial Compute Environment (ACE) cost monitoring and cost containment

  • Collaborate and support our internal IT partners with initiatives related to ACE;

  • Leading and coaching a team of 10 staff and develop talent within the team;

  • Relationship manager with Moody’s for AXIS and Risk Integrity, accountable for contract review and renewal, liaising with Moody’s on both functional and non-functional enhancement, and vendor engagement for support with initiatives and escalations.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:

  • Extensive working experience with actuarial, finance and IT professionals, with ability of understanding complex actuarial concepts

  • Demonstrated leadership skills (influencing, coaching, etc)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Self-starter and strong ability to orchestrate complex organization

  • Ability to navigating through ambiguity

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills as well as ability to process large amounts of information and summarize effectively

  • Ability to successfully manage complex projects and deliver timely results

  • Strong professional judgment, ability to assess risks, as well as to effectively identify opportunities for improved efficiency

  • Familiar with technology or very strong willingness and capability to learn

  • Proven track record of identifying opportunities to make change, understand how stakeholders respond to change, ability to embrace and drive changes.

  • Actuarial designation an asset

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location

Toronto, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between

$123,400.00 CAD - $229,300.00 CAD
