Join Takeda as an Associate Scientific Fellow where you will provide technical leadership in a matrix environment for process development chemists investigating biocatalytic transformations while developing and executing a biocatalysis strategy. You will also develop an appropriate strategy that will enable SMPD to identify, resource, develop, transfer, and integrate biocatalysis projects promptly within our development asset processes thereby improving quality, safety, cost, and sustainability metrics. As part of the Synthetic Molecule Process Development (SMPD), you will report to Head, Process Chemistry, Synthetic Molecule Process Development.

How you will contribute:

  • You are a motivated and team-oriented individual with a background in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry with outstanding experience scientific innovation and achievement.

  • Leverage the expertise and resources of external partners while building core biocatalysis screening and development capabilities at our Cambridge, MA site.

  • Provide strategic technical leadership within the fields of biocatalysis, organic, and process chemistry and mentorship for junior colleagues.

  • Contribute to biocatalysis projects through independent research and by leading or influencing others in a matrix environment.

  • Prepare and coordinate the completion of technical documentation, regulatory documents, validation plans, and reports.

  • Coordinate the transfer of projects, ensuring smooth transitions and maintaining project quality.

  • Maintain network of external vendors and academics that specialize in biocatalysis to ensure pipeline and department objectives are aligned with ideal collaborators.

  • Stay updated on emerging trends and advancements in organic chemistry, process development, and biocatalysis. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement for biocatalytic techniques, processes, and systems.

  • Move forward data and digital technology and AI efforts in collaboration with engineering and technology team.

  • Build biocatalysis competency across the members of the SMPD department with targeted seminars and on-hands demonstrations.

  • Identify, plan, and promote continuous improvement initiatives within the department.

  • Contribute significantly to develop, drive, and set vision and direction of departmental scientific and strategic initiatives.

  • Identify topics for initiatives and lead local/global initiatives on behalf of senior staff.

  • Contribute to develop, drive, and set the vision and direction of departmental activities, management of resources, time, and personnel.

  • Manage aspects of department performance, and effective communication within the group and across pharmaceutical sciences.

  • Communicate with senior management of other functions on the implementation of infrastructure, technology, work processes, or business processes.

  • Be a technical resource to guide group members in strategic decision making (and technical guidance as appropriate).

  • Incorporate industry trends and company goals in departmental strategy.

  • Ensure effective project management of all plans and projects within own area of responsibility and direct reports.

  • Contribute to cross-departmental strategy.

  • Initiate or endorse complex projects with extraordinary technical challenges and apply broad technical risk assessment skills.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering or related pharmaceutical science and 15+ years relevant industry experience

  • Master's degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering, or related pharmaceutical science; 13+ years relevant industry experience

  • PhD in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering, or related pharmaceutical science; 7+ years relevant industry experience

  • Experience developing and incorporating biocatalytic transformations into process development routes.

  • Extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry and route design for synthetic molecule construction.

  • Experience using process analytical technologies (FT-IR, NIR, FBRM, UV-vis, etc.).

  • Sound knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

  • Experience working cross-functionally with Process Engineering is a plus.

  • Experience managing resources at contract facilities.

  • Experience managing technical transfers.

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Significant technical and strategic leadership accomplishments.

  • Scientific track record through presentations at scientific conferences and publication of peer reviewed manuscripts.

  • Expertise in organic chemistry laboratory research, with expertise in process chemistry preferred; Subject matter expertise in biocatalysis is strongly preferred. Related expertise in biochemistry, oligonucleotide chemistry, or related fields is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully contribute across multiple scientific endeavors.

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$149,100.00 - $234,300.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive, per calendar year, up to 80 hours of sick time, and new hires are eligible to accrue up to 120 hours of paid vacation.
