Boston Public Schools Assistant Director of Health Services [BASAS 11B] (SY23-24) in Boston, Massachusetts

Reports To: Senior Director of Health Services General Description: The Assistant Director of School Health Services will ensure the equitable impact of health initiatives within Boston Public Schools and oversee the implementation of models of comprehensive school health and the alignment of health services to BPS’s Opportunity and Achievement Gap Policy, strategic plan, and its commitment to becoming a culturally and linguistically sustaining, anti-racist institution in order to maximize opportunities for students to engage in authentic learning and “develop into self-determined, independent learners, able to pursue their aspirations” (BPS Problem of Practice, 2016). Position Summary and General Responsibilities: The Assistant Director must bring a deep understanding of racial equity and its intersections with health equity as well as an understanding of culturally and linguistically sustaining practices/cultural responsiveness to guide their work in this role. The Assistant Director will provide direct support and consultation to school nurses and work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Health Services. The Assistant Director will serve as the BPS representative in partnerships with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other external agencies involving health services. The Assistant Director will supervise the formulation, writing, and reviewing grant opportunities within the health services arena to ensure alignment with BPS strategy, initiatives and appropriateness of implementation within Boston Public Schools. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: In collaboration with the Senior Director oversees nursing staff within BPS regarding clinical operations and consultation. Works with secondary heads of school and K-8 principals on developing consistent and promising practice standards that are culturally responsive to the schools’ student body for all nursing staff during the school year and during summer programs. Assists in the development, implementation, and management of partnerships with internal and external agencies that are responsive and reflective of students regarding health initiatives within BPS. Supervises the implementation of the Comprehensive School Health Services Grant with the project manager and school health services programs in all Boston Public Schools and ensures its alignment with the OAG policy and strategic plan. Supervises project manager in the writing of, and monitoring of funding opportunities and grants concerning school health services initiatives. In collaboration with the Nursing Program Director to coordinate, supervise and provide professional development opportunities for nurses related to school health initiatives that will help advance racial and health equity endeavors. Will work with the Nursing Program Director and Senior Director to ensure successful collaboration with the nurse joint union management team. Serves as a representative for school health issues on leadership teams across divisions within BPS. Assists in the recruitment, hiring and evaluation of culturally and linguistically diverse health professionals of all capacities, who reflect and embrace the cultural diversity and lived experience of the BPS students they will serve. Works collaboratively with team members in the department of Health Services and with cross-department administrators, to ensure quality health services to all students. Prepares ongoing data reports for the Senior Director of Health Services concerning health services. Performs other duties as requested by the Senior Director of Health Services. Qualifications - Required: A Masters degree in Nursing, Pubic Health or a Related Field Current certification in CPR, First Aid, & AED Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of the stresses of racism and poverty on students and their families served within urban school systems Minimum three (3) years working in an urban setting with diverse populations with proven effective and culturally responsive experience serving Black/ African American and Latinx populations and ability to lead others in conversations of race, racism and culture Demonstrate capability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, such as school based staff, central administration staff, families, youth, community members, community agencies and other essential partners while remaining student-centered, prioritizing racial equity and managing competing demands Growth, problem-solving, and team-oriented mindset Qualifications - Preferred: Experience working with children, adolescents, and families in a school health setting Experience working with external health agencies and hospitals BPS has a strong preference for linguistic diversity and we believe that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages:Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
