The Neighborhood Renewal Division seeks to partner with municipalities across the Commonwealth to address critical housing issues in the Commonwealth by renewing severely distressed properties and creating safe, habitable homes. Primary Duties: The Assistant Attorney General will work directly with cities and towns to renew abandoned and blighted properties, creating safe and habitable homes. Using both litigation and non-litigation tools, the AAG will work with local officials to develop strategies to prompt delinquent or absentee owners to repair and rehabilitate residential properties that pose dangers to the public, participate in property inspections and code enforcement activities, and act as lead attorney in receivership actions. The AAG will be assigned to work with a variety of municipalities, most of which will be outside of the Boston metropolitan area and may require travel throughout the Commonwealth, including Northern, Central, and possibly portions of the Western regions. This position requires an ability to interact with a variety of members of the public, including court staff, public officials, property owners, neighbors, and other members of the communities we serve. In addition, this position will require a significant amount of court appearances and may require some coverage of geographic regions beyond assigned municipalities. As NRD expands its work, there may be opportunities for work on policy issues related to housing and community development in the Commonwealth. Proficient analytical, organizational, writing, and oral advocacy skills are essential. Must be able to travel to communities across the Commonwealth and regularly appear in court in areas outside of Boston.
