Merck Application Modernization Architect in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description

The Application Modernization Architect role will be part of a global cloud services team focused on designing and reviewing application solutions, patterns and architectures utilizing AWS & Azure services. As part of the cloud team, the Application Modernization Architect will:

  • Actively work across the Application Modernization team to lead collection of patterns and measure success of application uplift.

  • Create innovative solutions for maintaining compliance and control of our company's hybrid cloud at scale via automation.

  • Partner with both Business and Technical Teams to architect highly available, compliant, and scalable application architectures.

  • Establish and mature capabilities for creation, management, and cross-team collaboration on infrastructure as code templates aligned with our company and industry leading practices.

  • Design, authoring, and release of code in a variety of common languages such as Python and Java.

  • Partner closely with our company's cloud security, application security, and compliance teams to build a sustainable and continuously compliant cloud ecosystem.

  • Act as a champion for the overall IT transformation and actively reinforce new ways of working and modern technology practices with peers and customers.

  • Propose solutions that aligns to enterprise architecture strategy.

  • Interact with both Business and Technical Teams throughout the various organizations for project consulting, design reviews, and technical guidance.

  • Partner with existing enterprise IT organization to integrate and expand existing enterprise capabilities into application architectures.

  • Actively participate in promoting best practices through community of practice and learning session.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • B.A/B.S. Computer Information Sciences, Business Management, or related field; Advanced degree is a plus.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 7+ years relevant experience in IT, preferably with previous experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

  • 5+ years direct experience implementing and managing solutions on AWS and/or Azure.

  • Microsoft Azure or AWS Certification.

  • Direct experience with infrastructure as code and software development in an enterprise environment.

  • Familiarity with common development and scripting languages.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with a variety of audiences and stakeholders including management and internal customers.

  • Demonstrated leadership in achieving shared objectives in a matrix organization, managing cross-functional teams in an extremely dynamic environment.

  • Results-orientation with the proven ability and reputation for developing plans and implementing them successfully.  

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • AWS advanced certification (AWS Architect Professional, AWS Security Specialty or similar).

  • Security certification (CISSP or similar).

  • Experience working on regulated systems.

  • Previous experience with IT transformations and implementing new ways of working.
