Boston University Advanced Practice Provider, Section of Hematology/Oncology, Medicine, Hematology Oncology, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts

The Section of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center is seeking an NP or PA to support its rapidly expanding program. We anticipate that the position will support the Stem Cell Transplant Program and in addition support a new Program for Red Blood Cell disorders. The Stem Cell Transplant Program performs autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplants for a range of hematologic disorders, including amyloidosis, a condition for which Boston Medical Center is an international referral center. The Program for Red Blood Cell disorders is a newly created program focusing on treatment of a range of anemias and hemoglobinopathies. Boston Medical Center is a 514-bed hospital that serves a diverse patient population from throughout New England and beyond, and is the major teaching hospital for Boston University. Advanced practice providers work closely with physicians in a team-based approach, to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to a shared panel of patients. In addition to providing clinical care, advanced practice practitioners have opportunities to participate in teaching conferences and relevant tumor boards. Teaching and mentoring opportunities for NP and PA students from area programs, including the PA program at Boston University, are also available.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care with guidance from a supervising physician.

• Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to develop, revise, and update clinical plans of care

• Performs comprehensive histories and physicals, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical and psychosocial concerns.

• Establishes goals of care with patients and families, and facilitates communication among all members of the health care team to ensure continuity of care. Assesses and addresses the physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients and families, and incorporates specialty services as appropriate in treatment goals.

• Facilitates problem solving and decision making by providing guidance and support to the patient, family, and health care provider around the prognosis and course of care in the acute care setting and following discharge.

• Participates in patient care conferences and/or team meetings

• Orders, reviews, and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.

• Evaluates and manages initiation of treatment, on-treatment and post-treatment side effects, as well as long-term surveillance and survivorship issues

• When appropriate, collaborates with BMC palliative care and coordinates care with local palliative and hospice care programs

• Participates in clinical trial enrollment and follow up of patients on clinical trials

• Writes accurate and timely progress notes, assists in maintaining an accurate medical record and communications between other care providers

Required Skills

• NP or PA certification is required. A minimum 2 years of practice experience is highly recommended.

• Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole or Portuguese a plus

• Strong communication and teamwork skills
