Department Summary:

MITRE is seeking to hire Synthetic Biology Researchers to establish a Biosensor Foundry to demonstrate and develop BioNet, a networked ecosystem connecting Synthetic Biology projects, practitioners, and providers through standardized interfaces. These are 3-year term-limited positions, with potential to be renewed or converted, and will involve substantial collaboration with external partners.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Co-lead conception and execution of research and development of fit-for-purpose biosensors with Synthetic Biology.

• Develop standardized, modular, well-specified and easily replicated methods for biosensor engineering to meet real-world requirements, such as for sustainability applications.

• Advance biosensor science and accessibility by making biosensor design and development systematically available through BioNet.

• Propose, develop, and execute collaborative biosensor projects using the prototype BioNet platform, leading to concrete demonstrations of biosensor concepts and devices, open literature publications, patent applications, and enhancement of MITRE’s Synthetic Biology and Biosensing capabilities.

• Contribute to advancement and refinement of the BioNet language and standards.

• Serve as a liaison between MITRE and Foundry partners.

This important research will directly contribute to MITRE's public interest mission of Solving Problems for a Safer World. By demonstrating the utility of reusable frameworks for Synthetic Biology applications, the Biosensor Foundry will highlight and elevate the BioNet’s standards and interfaces for ‘disaggregating’ Synthetic Biology workflows across organizations. Developing this approach in the context of sustainability applications of Synthetic Biology will further strengthen MITRE capabilities to transition projects rapidly and effectively into fielded applications.
