Lead Embedded Security Engineer


MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Securitydepartment is seeking to hire technical experts in hardware, firmware andsoftware security for embedded systems to lead and support a range of projectsof national significance in the public interest.

Qualified candidates will join a high-performing teamfocused on low-level hardware, firmware and software security. The team performs hands-on research andanalysis and develops proof-of-concept prototypes to advance thestate-of-the-art. Do you want to perform side-channel analysis? Key Functions:

  • Lead teams performing hands-on securityassessments of embedded systems

  • Design and develop prototype solutions to meetstated and identified requirements

  • Lead internal research projects; aid others inthe process

  • Provide consultations utilizing securityexpertise across a range of sponsors / challenges

  • Help shape technical capability areas byresearching and recommending capital investments and training opportunities



  • Technical depth in one or more embedded securitytopics including but not limited to side-channel analysis, fault inductionattacks, board-level and firmware/software reverse engineering andvulnerability discovery

  • Breadth of technical understanding of topicsrelating to embedded systems security

  • Strong leadership and communication skills


Highly-qualified candidates would meet several of thefollowing preferred qualifications, however, we do not expect any individual tomeet all of these and are looking to fill multiple positions according totechnical expertise.

Expertise in one or more of the following:

  • Software and hardware reverse engineering

  • Side-channel analysis

  • Fault injection attacks

  • Hands-on reverse engineering techniques(JTAG/UART probing, PCB mods and RE, etc.)

  • Anti-Tamper techniques

Familiarity with one or more of the following:

  • Scientific/numeric computing experience withPython

  • Statistical signal processing/machine learningtechniques

  • Invasive/semi-invasive attacks

  • Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs)

  • Operating systems & kernel internalsknowledge

  • Compiler internals, debuggers, disassemblers,and other low-level development tools

  • Commercial embedded and/or hardware security technologies(e.g. Trusted Platform Modules, Boot Guard, Secure Boot, ARM TrustZone, etc.)

  • Common cryptographic algorithms (e.g. AES, 3DES,RSA, ECC, etc.) and protocols (e.g. TLS, Diffie-Hellman key exchange, etc.)

  • Common weaknesses and modern attacks oncryptographic algorithms and protocols

A graduate degree (MS or PhD)
