In Office Requirements: Hybrid onsite for 2 or 3 days per week.

The Health Behavioral & Social Sciences Department serves many federal health agencies within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and more to bring design, strategy, and evaluation together to promote health across the nation.

The Health Behavioral & Social Sciences Department incorporates a range of backgrounds such as health communication, health organizational transformation, and behavioral/health economics – all from a lens of striving towards equity and addressing social determinants of health.

In previous years, interns have: prepared and drafted case study templates for digital health communication strategies; collated and synthesized feedback contributing to strategies to increase digital literacy; built interactive visualizations to improve the use of patient data during medical treatment; performed a literature review and environmental scan to support work in precision medicine.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Support MITRE teams to develop solutions for strategic integration of new tools, technologies, and innovative processes in the design and implementation of US federal health policies and programs.

  • Develop strategies and implementation plans for government programs for health initiatives and campaigns for the public and other audiences.

  • Coordinate and conduct activities related to long- and short-range planning; program and project development, implementation, and evaluation; audience research; and translation and dissemination of scientific information to audiences in a variety of formats.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited graduate degree-seeking program in Public Health or Healthcare (e.g., public policy, health sciences, or behavioral/health economics) or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.

  • Sustained excellence in academic performance.

  • Subject matter expertise in public health, health communication, health organizational effectiveness, behavioral/health economics, health analytics, and other health-related government initiatives.

  • For backgrounds in behavioral/health economics, the ability to work with data and/or data science experience in an econometric or data science programming language and/or statistical analysis program (e.g., Python, R, SAS, or Stata).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates have already completed BA/BS and are currently pursuing a graduate degree in a program related to public health or healthcare (e.g., public policy, health sciences field, or behavioral/health economics) or elated degree.

  • Capability in another health domain area (e.g., communication, analytics, information technology).

  • Proficiency and experience with design software (PPT, Adobe, etc.).

  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public
