The Embedded Systems Technologies Department in MITRE’s Cyber Effects Division is based out of Bedford, MA. The department manages, guides, and directs approximately 50 technical staff in support of domain-specific work across a variety of our sponsors’ missions. The Embedded Systems Technologies work program delivers reverse engineering and cyber capabilities for sponsors in partnership with organizations across MNS and MITRE Labs. Our focus is on applying advanced reverse engineering and capability research to maintain and enhance the impact of our sponsors on their core missions. Our staff maintain deep expertise in the relevant complex systems involved, while continuing to grow awareness of new technologies and techniques as the field of cyber and technology evolve. We lead the development and implementation of advanced capabilities that are critical to meeting national security objectives, using a variety of approaches and techniques.

Job Responsibilities :

As an N421 Early Career Group Leader, you will work with the Department Manager in managing various aspects of the department. You will focus on staff development, coaching, mentoring, and supervising assigned staff. In addition, you will also help the department reach its hiring goals and help with developing employee skills in various capability areas. Each Group Leader will also need to have technical expertise and perform as an individual contributor at least one of the projects in the department work program.

As a staff member in Department N421, applicants should have extensive experience/expertise in one or more of the following specialties.

  • Analysis of Network Systems and Protocols

  • Multi-architecture Reverse-engineering

  • Assembly Languages (x86, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, etc.)

  • Operating System Internals/Driver development

  • Computer Networking & Security

  • Complex System Characterization

  • Vulnerability Discovery and Analysis

  • Familiarity with Reverse Engineering and Debugging Tools (e.g., Ghidra, Emulators)

  • Experience developing C, Python software

Key Responsibilities include :

  • First line supervisor focused on staff performance management and development for a group of 4-6 early career staff within the N421 department. Responsible for completing employee actions in Workday and maintaining confidential employee HR information.

  • Department and Staff Engagement – Serves as direct supervisor for assigned staff, conducting performance and development conversations/check-ins; mentors, advocates and recognizes staff; communicates with Project/Task Leaders on staff performance; assesses staff performance and provides constructive feedback to staff

  • Technical Quality/Execution/Capability Development – Assists Department management and leadership team, as needed, in workforce shaping, work program development, maintaining awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunities

  • Recruiting/Hiring – Assist Department management with hiring interns and college graduates for positions in our department

  • Individual Technical Contributor – GLs are expected to perform management activities at an ongoing 5% LOE and to apply the remainder of their time to relevant work programs

Required Qualifications :

  • BS Degree in Computer Science or related field

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

  • A minimum of four years’ experience in a Cyber Research and Development role investigating embedded systems and kernel-level software

  • Effective communication skills

  • Experience mentoring/developing interns or early career professionals.

  • Experience recruiting/hiring/interviewing early career professionals and interns

  • An existing TS

Preferred Qualifications :

  • An existing, active TS/SCI clearance
