Job Summary

The Network Communications Projects Engineer has responsibility for all inside and outside networking cable plant including both twisted copper pair and fiber-optic cable as well as pathway (conduit, duct-bank, etc.). The Network Communications Projects Engineer is responsible for project management, estimating, design, preparation of drawings, specifications and contract documents for networking and IT projects as well as oversight of outside IT designers used by Design and Construction Management and other departments. The incumbent will work with the Network Communications team overseeing move, add and chang e work for networks on campus as well as emergency cable repairs as part of the engineering team.

Essential Functions

  • Review the work of outside contracted design and installation services and contractors to ensure proper performance and quality.

  • Coordinate and oversee IT installation projects with other University agencies such as Space Planning, Facilities Planning, Physical Plant, EH& S, and the State Department of Public Safety to optimize building systems safety, efficiency and maintainability.

  • Prepare, review, approve, and implement plans and specifications of IT infrastructure design work. Prepare contract documents and specifications as needed. Administer projects. Responsible for the overall performance and final outcomes of projects. Ensure proper documentation.

  • Design cable installations for new buildings and renovated areas in accordance with University, National and International standards.

  • Set and maintain standards for campus IT installations for present and planned campus IT work.

  • Coordinate with the State Division of Capital and Asset Management (DCAM), the State Building Inspector, UMBA and other State, Federal and Local agencies on assigned projects to keep assigned projects in compliance with all relevant codes and laws.

  • Develop and review and administer contracts with non-University cable plant installers to ensure compatibility with University standards and requirements.

  • Plan, design and administer licensing and permit applications for all the University’s off-campus aerial cabling systems with appropriate public utility companies and town authorities.

  • Work and consult with faculty, staff and students to determine existing conditions and establish project requirements for developing scopes of work for projects.

  • Manage and conduct feasibility studies for design projects including factors involving building utilities such as cooling loads and power availability.

  • Maintain current knowledge of all applicable regulations and codes regarding network and cabling systems design and knowledge of technical developments.

    Other Functions

    Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical , Civil or Electrical Engineering and five (5) years’ experience designing and managing large, complex cabling systems, preferably in a higher education/ institution al environment.

  • Hold Massachusetts Licensure as a Professional Engineer, or obtain Massachusetts Licensure through reciprocity within 1 Year.

  • Certification as BICSI RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) or qualifications necessary to obtain certification within one year.

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications, word processing and data management systems, spreadsheet applications and AutoCAD.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate the work of other design professionals, consultants and contractors and experience supervising technical staff.

  • Strong attention to detail and written skills.

  • Must have home internet access.

  • Employee will access work sites.

    Work Schedule

  • Mon-Fri First Shift.

  • Required to work nights and weekends as business needs dictate.
