Job Summary

The Manager of Instructional Design, Engagement and Support provides oversight to the University’s instructional design team which includes developing the goals and direction of the team in coordination with Department and University initiatives. This position leads instructional design initiatives and pedagogical innovations in teaching and learning, provides leadership, instructional and program design expertise, and project management in the design, development, and delivery of internal and external training and development, as well as consultations in the development and design for online, hybrid and in person courses. The Manager also develops and implements programs and strategy for ongoing assistance to faculty on emerging trends in instructional design best practices and acts as the campus liaison to other instructional design leads throughout the University.

Essential Functions

  • Creates policies and processes for course development teams involved in design, redesign, development, and delivery of internal and external training and development as well as online, hybrid and in person courses.

  • Develops and implements workshops, programs and strategy for ongoing assistance to faculty on emerging trends in instructional design and learning technologies.

  • Oversees, mentors, manages performance and sets goals for team members and ensures their work is in line with the overall, annual unit goals and objectives.

  • Creates policies and processes for overseeing and managing the design, development, and redesign of programs and courses to align with university initiatives.

  • Manages relationships with instructional design/instructional technology leads within each School and College to ensure a symbiotic relationship between IDEAS and Schools/Colleges.

  • Advises the Associate Director in the development of strategic priorities for the unit.

  • Is a leader within the University in instructional design through professional development, committee work, task force participation, and symposia to extend knowledge and build community.

  • Serves on related committees and task forces.

  • Oversees IDEAS training and development initiatives.

  • Works with the Faculty Development team to synthesize training and development and faculty development initiatives.

  • Directly supervises Instructional Design and Faculty Support Coordinators on the Instructional Design Team including job assignments, prioritization, performance evaluations, training and scheduling.

Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree with more than five (5) years of progressively responsible experience OR a Master’s degree with more than three (3) years of progressively responsible experience.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and/or mentorship skills.

  • In-depth theoretical knowledge of instructional design concepts including backward design, ADDIE, and UDL.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of instructional tools, technologies, and LMSes.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with instructors and administrators in a higher education environment and provide strategic and operational guidance.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and soft skills with the ability to communicate instructional design concepts to a non-instructional design audience (in writing and in person), speak or make presentations before groups, and conduct effective training.

  • Ability to work independently and/or with multiple constituencies in a culture of innovation.

  • Customer-service driven, diplomatic and team-oriented approach.

  • Ability to contribute toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity and collaboration.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Some night and weekend work may be required.

  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
