Job Summary

The Department of Geosciences and Department of Environmental Conservation together with the MS Geography – GIST program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seek an instructor for WebGIS for the Spring semester, 2023. The instructor of this course will teach one combined section of this three-credit course (GEOGRAPH 493W/693W/NRC 597GW), with in-person flexible instruction.

Essential Functions

Teach GEOGRAPH 493W/693W/NRC 597GW (3 credit) during the Spring 2023 semester.

  • This course will focus on hands-on practice using and building web-based mapping and analysis platforms, including ArcGIS Online, Google Maps, Leaflet, and Open Street Map. Along with conceptual discussion of how the internet, web servers, and cloud-based GIS services function, students will create and host web services relevant to their coursework, research, or professional goals.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.

  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in Geography or a related field.

  • Experience with web-based GIS platforms, especially ArcGIS Online.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Prior teaching experience.

Additional Information

This course meets twice per week: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 9:45am. The UMass Spring semester begins on February 6, 2023 and final grades are due June 1, 2023. The instructor must be able to teach in person in Amherst while capturing course content for synchronous and asynchronous remote learners. The instructor for this course will be provided the most recent course materials used in the course for use and adaption as they see fit. The expected enrollment for the course is 30 students. The instructor will also have access to office space to hold office hours and, given adequate student demand, will be supported by one ten-hour per week graduate TA for grading and office hour support.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 10 hours a week, 25% FTE.

Salary Information

Salary commensurate with experience.
