Job Summary: As a member of the Customer Service Team, the Customer Assistant II serves in a dual role between the Treasurer/Collector\'s office and the Assessor\'s office, performing a full range of complex accounting and clerical duties for the Town, including collection of taxes and Town bills, exemptions for real estate taxes, billing and abatements for motor excise taxes, and personal property taxes. Major Duties: Responsible for receipt of cash and verification of funds collected over the counter. Calculates and assesses interest due on delinquent accounts. Maintains and reconciles daily cash drawer. Prepares and balances deposits, and examines receipts for accuracy and completeness. Assists with the processing of various abatement applications such as motor vehicle excise bills, real estate, and personal property bills. Maintains appropriate documentation of applications and decisions. Responsible for processing information from assigned departments using computer systems. Researches and responds to customer inquiries about account balances, assessment, and eligibility information. Prepares draft correspondence to requests for information. Performs routine clerical and administrative work such as answering phones, providing customer assistance, maintaining office supplies and records, data processing, receiving and distributing incoming mail, and inputting data to standard office and department programs and forms. Responsible for directing visitors to Town offices. Responsible for daily handling and processing of outgoing mail for all departments, for ordering related supplies, and for arranging for mail machine maintenance. Actively participates in Customer Service Team meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High school degree or equivalent PLUS at least two (2) years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or cash handling; AND an interest in or familiarity with real estate transactions, appraisals, or assessing. Working knowledge of accounting practices and cash handling skills Excellent customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing). Ability to handle stressful situations. Ability to work professionally and cooperatively with the public and coworkers. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual communications capabilities preferred. Tools and Equipment Used: Telephone, computer, including word processing and spreadsheet software; copy machine; postage machine; fax machine, adding machine.
