AMHERST Department: Public Works Job Status: Full-Time Days: Sun., Mon., Tue., Wed., Thu. Status: Open Until Filled Details: This is a full-time benefitted position that offers a starting annual rate of \$57,185-\$76,852 depending on experience and/or qualifications. Job Summary: Performs a variety of supervisory, semi-skilled and skilled technical work in the operation, maintenance, and process control of the wastewater treatment facility, pump stations and collection system. Must be available for after hours emergency duties and participates in on-call response program. Designated essential personnel. Major Duties: 1. Assures that plant and pump stations operate with required standards of United States Environmental Protection Agency and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. Collects and analyzes wastewater and sludge samples as needed. 2. Provides on the job daily supervision of assigned crew and assists in motivating and evaluating personnel. Acts as a liaison between crew members and Division Supervisor. 3. Operates all equipment at the treatment plant and pumping stations. Records data, prepares reports; and performs adjustments to optimize sludge processing equipment and chemical feed systems. 4. Completes programming work on instrumentation and SCADA systems at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. 5. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and collection system. Facilitates repairs and /or assists with repairs as necessary. Develops preventative maintenance schedules for the sewer collection system. Writes work orders and assigns work. Organizes and implements treatment and sewer flushing programs including keeping records through using computer databases. 6. Oversees the safety of assigned workers by instructing individuals in proper safety procedures and monitoring work in progress. Maintains safe work environment by maintaining awareness of all physical, chemical and biological safety hazards in workplace. Must be familiar with working safely with moving and/or dangerous equipment. Instructs staff in use of safety equipment related to confined space work areas, chemicals, hazardous materials, fall protection situations and in working safe in all areas. 7. Performs landscaping, snow removal, cleaning, painting, and building maintenance duties. Responsible for daily inspection, activation of alarm systems and securing facilities at end of work period. 8. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED equivalent PLUS 5 years of operation experience in a grade 6 or 7 wastewater treatment facility, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operation activities. Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment Ability to complete programming of instrumentation and SCADA systems. Ability to guide, direct and motivate employees. Ability to organize and supervise the activities of crews Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public. Special Requirements: Valid State Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) Class B with tanker and airbrake endorsements or ability to obtain License within one year of hire; Commonwealth of Massachusetts Grade 6 or 7 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License; or as established by Section 257 Code of Massachusetts Regulations or ability to obtain License within one year of hire. Certification in the FEMA National Incident Management System ICS up to and including 200 or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire. Preferred Requirements: Hydraulic License
