THE COLLEGE
Hampshire College is an independent, experimenting liberal arts institution with a mission to advance social justice and transform higher education. Located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, we provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 900 students. Hampshire’s academic program is unique within higher education in the United States. We have neither departments nor majors, and our students draw from multiple disciplines and methodologies to develop their own concentrations, and every student completes a year-long substantial project synthesizing their course of study as a condition of graduation. Students are provided narrative evaluations of their work instead of grades.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
We seek creative, interdisciplinary adjunct faculty to contribute inventive, transdisciplinary courses that cross boundaries and stimulate and support student project work. Such courses can span the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the visual and performing arts. We are currently particularly interested (but not limited to) in interdisciplinary courses arising from these areas: public health, computer science, psychology, cultural studies, and creative writing. While our specific needs vary from semester to semester, we primarily seek instructors who can offer introductory, interdisciplinary courses with broad appeal.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
Incorporates an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into regular practice.
Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Ability to design engaging student-centered courses to meet diverse learners, teach with inclusive pedagogies, and support and mentor students as individual learners.
Masters degree or equivalent.
At least one year of relevant teaching experience.
WHO SHOULD APPLY:
Hampshire College is an equal opportunity employer and deeply committed to a community of excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We are particularly committed to revealing and combating the social and institutional structures that support racism and white supremacy in all phases of employment and college life. We believe that the educational and employment environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas come together to work and grow. We encourage applications from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, sexual minority groups, veterans, and other candidates who will contribute to the diversification and enrichment of ideas and perspectives. Hampshire College is committed to removing barriers to employment faced by equity-seeking groups and encourages (but does not require) members of these groups to self-identify in their application materials. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in the work environment are particularly encouraged to apply.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please apply via our website at https://jobs.hampshire.edu/ and submit a cover letter (which includes proposed interdisciplinary courses you could offer), CV, a statement addressing your approach to justice, equity and antiracism (JEA) in teaching philosophy and practice, and names/phone numbers of three professional references.
We always welcome application materials from prospective adjunct instructors. We review applications regularly, and will contact you if your proposed courses match our upcoming course needs.
